Ashburnham Plants Pollinator Shrubs at Winchester Park Ahead of July Fourth Weekend

Ashburnham is heading into the July Fourth holiday weekend with a quiet news cycle, but one concrete environmental improvement at a local park and a pair of municipal closures give residents useful information to carry into the week.

TOWN HALL

The town has announced the addition of shrubs and small trees to Winchester Park, a planting effort aimed at supporting declining pollinator populations. The project reflects a broader regional concern about the health of bee, butterfly, and other pollinator communities, and positions Winchester Park as a small but tangible local response.

Residents should also note two upcoming closures: Town Hall will be shut on Thursday, July 2, and the Transfer Station will be closed Saturday, July 4, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Normal hours resume after the holiday. Water conservation restrictions remain in effect through September 30, and a board vacancy notice posted in mid-June is still open — residents interested in serving on a town board or committee can check the town website for the current list of openings.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The Stevens Memorial Library continues to highlight a significant funding win: a provisional $20,000 federal Library Services and Technology Act grant, awarded through the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, will support a new program called "At the Table: Food Literacy from the Ground Up." The initiative will fund library programs and resources designed to help Ashburnham residents build food literacy skills. Library Director Jess Mynes and the Stevens Memorial Library staff are positioned to roll out programming details as the grant moves toward finalization.

The library's new FY2026–29 Strategic Plan is also available for public review, outlining updated objectives developed from community stakeholder conversations.
